Hospitable education: new research group in the field of inclusive education

The Driestar research centre has started a new research unit, titled 'Herbergzaam onderwijs' (Dutch for: Hospitable education). The title reflects the ambition that we want all children, with or without disabilities, to be welcome at school.

We do this based on the belief that a school should not select in advance on the basis of a child’s assumed abilities, but that everyone is welcome with all they bring. All students have gifts with which they can serve others.

Through participatory action research, the research group work together with schools to look for ways in which a modern school can give shape to these principles. Based on preliminary interviews with schools, it was decided to focus on the competencies of teachers to begin with before looking at the boundaries that are faced in practice.
