The core-business of a teacher is teaching children to read, write and calculate. However, that is not everything they do in their daily work. The attention of teachers is not limited to the intellectual aspects of a child’s development. A good teacher does not separate a child’s learning process from the other aspects of their physical, emotional and social development.
Most teachers work on the basis of experience and intuition. A teacher may face a child that feels lonely and do everything they can to do something about it. What if problems become more complex? We believe that teachers need a method of systematic reflection on children's problems at school. The main tool in this reflection is the so-called ‘step-by-step model’. This model offers teachers a rich resource for analysing children’s problems and analysing their own way of thinking and acting.
The title of the course is ‘How to understand and support children in need’. We believe that teaching children will be more effective and guidance more fruitful, when a teacher is able to understand a child in all aspects of their life, like their family background, their upbringing at home, the way the child feels and their ambitions.
Any teacher who needs to acquire (more) knowledge, skills and a change of attitude in understanding and supporting children who are in need of help.
